Receptors occupy the surface of the monitor like a reversed retina; they read the fish's swimming as the movement of a point within a system of coordinates and communicate this movement to a computer. This computer translates the data into a system of numbers and passes these on to a second computer which then digitally transforms these signals into audio tones. The observer's eyes see the fish in the aquarium as a real object and the fish on the monitor as an electronic image. However, through the monitor's retina, the computer perceives that which it offers to our ears: an image translated into sound. By simply moving in its element, the fish produces a permanent stream of images and sounds, apparently unconsciously and without intent. Meanwhile, the observer sees his or her own reflection in the aquarium's and monitor's glass surface. Wie auf einer umgekehrten Netzhaut, befinden sich auf der Oberfläche des Bildschirmes Rezeptoren, welche das Schwimmen des Fisches als Bewegung eines Punktes in einem Koordinatensystem lesen und an einen angeschlossenen Computer übermitteln. Dieser Rechner übersetzt die Daten in ein Zahlensystem, und leitet sie in dieser Form an einen zweiten Computer weiter, der sie digital in Töne umwandelt. Die Augen des Betrachters sehen den Fisch im Aquarium als real, und jenen auf dem Bildschirm als elektronisches Abbild an; der Computer aber nimmt über die Netzhaut des Bildschirmes wahr, was er, als in Töne verwandeltes Bild, dem Gehörsinn vermittelt. Der Fisch produziert permanent Bilder und Töne, scheinbar unbewußt und unfreiwillig, allein indem er sich in seinem Element bewegt; und der Betrachter sieht, den Fisch beobachtend auf den gläsernen Oberflächen von Aquarium und Bildschirm, auch ein Spiegelbild seiner selbst.
